The Mystery of Easter
Easter is a reminder of who we are. It is, at its heart, a mystical experience.
Christ taught that all that is terrible and ugly and hateful in this world comes from our belief in separation from God. This belief makes us afraid and causes us to see the external world and others as the sources of our fear. All fear, anger, hatred, evil, despair, pain and judgement begin in fearful minds.
The key to lasting happiness and peace, he taught, is love, the loving recognition of ourself in others, and them in us.
Love yourself, he said, because you are of God who created everything perfect, and love your fellow man as you love yourself.
|
|
So why did He die on the cross for us if we are perfect? To show us in the most powerful way possible that if we live as one with God and our fellow man, the things of the body have no hold over us. We rise above them and become truly free.
We may not attain this complete faith that we are one with God and all His creations, but Jesus showed that it is the way to our spiritual rebirth. All these things that I have done, you can do, he said, if you have complete faith.
The message of the resurrection is life. When we believe we are the body and that the world is what we perceive through our senses, we believe also in death. And what we truly believe, we experience. |
|
But in truth, there is no death because we are eternal souls. So there is no reason to believe in death. When we know ourselves and live as eternal souls here on earth, as Jesus chose to do, we do not die. We have no reason to fear anything, for we are... always have been and will be...part of God.
So what is death? Nothing. Mystical texts teach us that death is not real…a result of our belief in separation, which is a belief in opposites. We think that if we have life, there must be death. If there is good, there must be evil. But in God, and therefore in us if we choose to see it, is the truth that all is one....eternal life, boundless good, constant joy. This was Christ’s teaching and his example.
Even now, we can begin to experience this as a possibility through meditation, which centres us completely in the immediate experience of being. Eckhart Tolle calls it being in the now. Quakers call it listening for the small still voice within. Buddha called it enlightenment. It is the experience of total oneness with all being, of total love, of eternity.
Our body-mind may pull us back again and again to fear and separation, but once we have experienced this oneness, our belief in separation is weakened. Thereafter, every time we direct our minds back to that deep inner experience of oneness, we strengthen our vision of the truth a little more.
WAKE UP!
Direct your mind away from death, fear and separation,
and turn it to the holy spirit within you…. back to God…
and know yourself as love without limit.
If this all sounds like too much, start with yourself. Love who you are. Completely. Love and accept you. Forgive you for errors or weaknesses. Let go of fear and doubt. Have absolute faith in your goodness, your holiness, your perfection. You were created by God, who creates only perfection.
Be loving toward yourself, and recognise that everything you think and do that is wrong or unworthy of a perfect being arises from fear. Comfort your fears, for they are groundless. You are a perfect child of God.
And as your inner peace and love grow, extend them to others, one person at a time if you can do no more....pure love that wants nothing, asks for nothing, needs nothing. One person at a time, and then another, and then strangers on the street, and people half way across the world, and then even to those who irritate you and humanity in general.
Start now, and meditate on love and acceptance daily, whenever you think of it. Just stop your fearful, irritable mind for a moment, and turn to your soul deep within and let yourself experience love. Recognise the body-mind’s resistance, and put it aside.
As your awareness of your soul awakens, you will seek this experience of oneness more and more. You will live more and more as the soul you are.
I wish you a thoughtful, love-filled, peaceful Easter.
