Start with the expectation of success
Spirituality is not about being perfect. Indeed, we cannot be perfect because we are limited by our material bodies and minds, and physicality itself, which is only a tiny aspect of the whole. Perfection is whole, complete. An imperfect or partial vehicle cannot channel perfection.
The aim is to become more spiritual; to bring more of Spirit into our daily lives. You can achieve this.
Seek your own path
Most people never begin the journey because they are waiting for someone to show them the way. They want someone to tell them exactly what to do. You have free will. Only you can choose what to do.
But you are not alone . Many masters have taught us how to proceed. Many seekers before you have set up guideposts to others along the way. Here are some to get you started:
Seek help from within. Help is always at hand. The answers you need are not locked away. They have always been available to you. You have only to seek them. God imposes nothing, not even enlightenment. Yet if you ask and seek, and you truly desire to know, the answers you seek will be revealed to you. Look within. Meditate, have faith that the answers will come, and be patient.
Join a community of like-minded people. Doing it alone is hard and unnecessary. Find a meditation group; join a spiritual study group; worship with others. The power of your prayer and your spiritual commitment will be increased. You don't need to agree on all points. Goodness to others, truthfulness, and commitment to God come in all shapes and philosophies.
Focus your mind on higher truths. You can benefit immensely from study and learning, as well. Read sacred writings, or the writings of wise people. Listen to those whose lives and actions are full of truth and goodness (full of God). If something speaks to you, write it down and meditate on it. Consider how you can apply it in your life. Discipline your mind by continually re-focusing it on what is true.
Follow the example of others. I have found it very helpful to foster certain qualities that I have admired in others. I try to be truthful like Socrates; purposeful and pure of heart like Gandhi; courageous like Frodo; patient and humble like Kofi Annan; non-grasping like the Gatauma Buddha; dutiful like Arjuna and my grandmother, generous and forgiving like my grandchildren; loving and without judgement like Jesus the Christ. I live up to none of these persons, but they keep me on track, like guiding stars in the dark night.
Establish a daily spiritual practice. Your body and physical mind will always pull you in the direction of materiality. Your spirit will lead you towards God. Which are you nourishing? As you feed your body what it needs to thrive, and your physical mind what it needs to stay active, so you must nurture your spirit. Strengthen your oneness with spirit with regular spiritual practice: prayer, meditation, just sitting and reflecting on God, reading sacred books, expressing gratitude...whatever focuses your mind on God (spirit, goodness, love). Set aside time just for this. Incorporate prayer, mindfulness and gratitude into your daily activities.
Seek the truth; recognise and choose truth; live the truth.
